Bouzaid has a life-long association with the sea. Her early works capture in an impressionistic style the delicate nuances of light as it filters through the lush trees and hidden waterways of Great Barrier Island. Bouzaid's intent in these pieces is to capture "the fluid, feminine nature of water on canvas".
Following her post-graduate study, Bouzaid's work shifted away from the figurative towards more abstract compositions. Her 2007 exhibition Sea Spray offered bold, fluid paintings of the subtle patterns made by breaking waves and flowing water.
In her most recent exhibition, Bouzaid's paintings are composed of shimmering tonal bands, born of her observations of the changing colours of sea, land and sky. Like layered horizons, they evoke a range of moods, from blazing and dramatic to quiet and meditative.
