JONATHAN CAMPBELL

Jonathan Campbell was born in 1969 in Lower Hutt, where he still lives and works.

Trained as a foundry assistant to Paul Dibble, Elizabeth Thompson and Terry Stringer, Campbell works as a master foundryman, casting works in bronze for many of New Zealand's most respected artists in addition to his own work.

Beautifully cast in mottled blue-green bronze, Campbell's witty, sleek sculptures explore the notion of collecting. Campbell notes, "I have been surrounded by collectors my whole life...to me, collecting became a three-dimensional diary: I remember where every piece comes from, which is a constant reminder of where I have been." Through the figure of the magpie - an avid, beady-eyed collector, often seen in Campbell's sculptures clutching its prize - Campbell undertakes a kind of anthropology of collectors and collecting, threaded with ideas of memory, power and possession.
