JONATHAN CAMPBELL

DEAD COLLECTORS
1 July - 8 August 2008

Jonathan (Born 1969) has worked as a master foundryman for the past 17 years. Craftsmanship and a vivid imagination collide in the work of sculptor, Jonathan Campbell. His large and intricate assemblages in cast bronze explore the realm of the obsessive collector. These unique and witty pieces reveal the infinite delight he takes in his craft and his materials. This is Jonathan's second exhibition at Orex. The works are more ambitious in scale and as brilliant as ever in form and technique.

Artist statement

Collecting has been a prominent theme in my recent work. The specific narrative of this show is what happens to a collectors collection post mortem.

The objects are deaths shadow. The vultures are deaths birds, scavenging, avid, relentless and gregarious. Custody, like the collectors life, is temporary. Scaffolding is temporary. The vultures are here to claim, steal and dispute.

Loss and power of possession are prominent. Power is tapped into, inherited and re-routed. It can be more or less than bargained for, eventually it is switched off... in the mean-time they accumulate.
