The Passage: Approaching Figure (still)
giclee print, 18 x 22 cm

Artist statement

In my video work, geographical landscapes are used to explore the concept of intangible journeys that are made through metaphysical landscapes of the mind. Anonymous figures move in slow motion through desolate and remote environments. The focus is on the figures passage as they negotiate often harsh and inhospitable terrain. At times their journeys are intercepted by symbolic images – representing visions of society, memory and need – which are explored, but ultimately rejected, leaving the figures to continue on a quest towards an unknown destination.

The Passage (2009)

5 mins 53 secs, colour, DV 4:3

In The Passage, a solitary ghost-like figure moves through a barren and remote landscape towards an unknown destination. Its journey is momentarily halted as it stumbles across an architectural structure. Upon a brief inspection, the figure rejects this symbol of human civilisation to continue on its passage. Layers of audio distortion have been constructed that, with the addition of a ubiquitous howling wind, create a feeling of isolation and emptiness. Produced with funding from the Screen Innovation Production Fund, a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission.

Our Voices Are Mute (2008)

4 mins 42 secs, colour, DV 4:3

In Our Voices Are Mute, anonymous silhouettes move slowly through a desolate and remote environment. Architectural structures of civilisation appear on screen, prompting an exploration of the buildings by the figures, until they are ultimately rejected, and the figures continue their passage. Visual distortion is used and pixels are enlarged through the use of custom-made diffusion lens filter to obscure all superfluous detail.

Departure (2008)

3 mins 28 secs, colour, DV 4:3

In Departure, an anonymous figure moves through an isolated geographical landscape that is devoid of any human existence. Its journey and purpose is unknown. Video grains are enlarged and the images distorted through the use of diffusion filters; the sounds are reminiscent of bells clanging and chains dragging. We are witness to the isolation, the anonymity, the forward motion to somewhere or nowhere. The landscape is bleak and timeworn; the figure moves like a shadow searching for a resting place.
