ZARAHN SOUTHON

Born in Auckland in 1975, Zarahn Southon is of Maori (Ngati Tuwharetoa), Pakeha and Samoan descent. After completing a BVA in Painting at Manukau Institute of Technology, he travelled to Europe to study classical painting at fine arts academies in Florence, Italy, and at the prestigious Studio Escalier in France. He completed further study at the Bay Area Classical Artists Atelier in San Francisco, where he was tutored by the renowned painter Ted Seth Jacobs.

Southon was the winner of the Martin Hughes Contemporary Pacific Art Scholarship in 2005 and the Jouffrault Scholarship at the Studio Escalier in 2007. He also works as a tutor in Life Drawing at Art Station and at AUT University.

Self Portrait With Brush (2008)
oil on linen, 39 x 34 cm

A classical figurative painter trained in the tradition of the European Masters, Southon's paintings are luminous, finely detailed portraits with the darkly beautiful lighting of Rembrandt and Caravaggio. Yet though they display his mastery of the human form, Southon's works are more than technical studies; always gesturing to submerged narratives, they often explore the history and mythology of his Maori heritage. The New Zealand Land Wars are brought to life in Southon's dramatic, highly-charged images of brutality and beauty, pride and violence.

However, despite this subject matter, Southon describes himself as "a painter first and foremost and a Maori Samoan second". His series of self-portraits represents a ludic play of identities as he examines his own form in the changing light of different histories and artistic traditions.
