Gallery Statement:

“To me there’s still that sense in the New Zealand landscape of undiscovered hills and far horizons that speak of possibility, of escape. There’s an underlying dark spirit to the land, a sense of the primitive is still prevalent. For all that we try to shape the landscape to our desires, we are still just as shaped by it.

Scene is a story about a journey. Maroi use "taniko" to describe "the space between", for example - between high and low tide, day and night. This story talks about a journey through this "space between", the space between leaving one life and beginning the next, the space where change occurs.

The works are the result of a series of road trips, from Taupo to Northland, some known since Woodruffe’s childhood days in the family camper van on summer holidays.
